Concrete is a strong composite material made by mixing aggregates together and leaving it to harden over time. It provides a durable finish for driveways, construction bases and for a variety of other jobs. Because it is seen as a very strong material, many don’t consider that you also need to maintain concrete. Maintaining your concrete will help to extend its life, while also keeping it looking great.
Here is a guide to maintaining concrete.
Cleaning
You want to ensure your concrete is cleaned regularly. As it is a material often used on floors or close to the ground, plenty of dirt and debris can quickly spread across a concrete surface. If it is not dealt with, this debris might sink into the concrete and leave permanent marks. If anything has stained your concrete, such as oil dripping from a car or fertiliser, it is advised you clean your concrete thoroughly as quickly as possible before the stain/discolouration becomes permanent.
Cleaning can take many forms, as plenty of debris and dirt can be simply swept away with a brush. However, for any dirt that has settled on the concrete surface, you will need to use proper concrete cleaner to ensure the stains come out properly. Make sure any chemicals you use are approved for use on concrete, or they may do more harm than good.
Sealing
One of the best ways to extend the life of a concrete surface and keep it looking the best it can be is using a sealer. Concrete sealers can be applied to the surface and they will help to prevent damage and staining from occurring. The best part is most sealers only need applying once every few years, so your surfaces can remain in great condition without having to constantly reseal.
Be careful about which chemicals you use on or around your concrete surface in regards to sealers. Some de-icers that you may use on your car can work through a concrete seal and harm your concrete.
Think About Weight
While concrete is a quite durable material, you should think carefully about the weight that you apply to it. While a concrete driveway is fine for the weight of an everyday car, parking a large truck or leaving a large skip on this concrete is not good for it, as it doesn’t have the strength to support it properly.
