Concrete is one of the most capable modern materials and many of the world’s most ambitious projects would simply not have been possible without it. Aside from constructing buildings, the modern material has helped build some of the most ambitious structures the world has ever seen. The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in China for example is the world’s longest bridge and travels a staggering 102.4 miles. The bridge is made almost entirely from concrete blocks and is undoubtedly one of the most impressive structures of all time. So, how is concrete made and what makes it so strong?
How concrete is made
Concrete is made using a mixture of Portland cement which makes up around 10 to 15% of the overall mixture. Then water is added to create a thick mixture. The final step involves adding aggregates which are combined with the mixture to create an incredibly strong formula.
This amazingly capable mixture has become a staple in modern construction and is now one of the most popular materials in the world. So, what are some famous concrete buildings and what makes them so impressive?
Pantheon Rome
It may seem slightly strange to mention a building that was designed and constructed in the ancient world while talking about concrete. It is a common misconception that concrete is a modern invention. In fact, concrete has been around for some time and even the Romans used the material. The ancient world didn’t just use the material lightly though, in reality, they pioneered it.
The Pantheon in Rome uses concrete to create its iconic domed roof which spirals upward toward a circular window. Sunlight pours out of this window during the day and lights up the entire inside of the building.
Unite D’Habitation
Le Corbusier is undoubtedly one of the most famous architects of all time. His style was unique and combined both industrial elements and more classic domestic features. One of his finest examples is an apartment building in Marseille named Unite D’Habitation. This building truly celebrates concrete and the entire structure is built using the material.
Los Manantiales Restaurant
This building in Mexico is our first structure on the list to feature reinforced concrete. This slightly more modern form of the material is incredibly capable and can form the frame of structures that seem as though they’re almost floating. The Los Manantiales Restaurant is one such building. The design centres around a series of incredible vaulted ceilings which create an amazing geometric structure.
